Are ChatGPT usage credits the same as OpenAI API credits?
No. ChatGPT usage credits for supported features such as Codex and Work are not API credits.
What matters
- OpenAI explicitly says personal-plan usage credits are not API credits.
- The same eligible ChatGPT credit balance can be shared across supported ChatGPT features such as Codex, Work, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Using Codex with your own API key is a separate billing path from signing in with your ChatGPT plan.
What this means in practice
If you are trying to extend your normal Codex or Work usage, buy credits from the ChatGPT/Codex Usage screen when offered. Do not buy API balance expecting it to refill the same ChatGPT usage meter.
