Should I turn on automatic reload for ChatGPT credits?
Use it when uninterrupted Work/Codex operation matters more than manually approving each purchase. Otherwise, one-time credit purchases give you tighter control.
What matters
- OpenAI can automatically purchase credits when your balance falls below a selected minimum.
- A maximum monthly spend can apply to automatic reloads.
- If your balance is already below the minimum when you enable reload, a purchase may happen immediately.
What this means in practice
For occasional overflow weeks, I prefer one-time purchases first so you can learn your real burn rate. For a production workflow where stopping is costly, auto-reload can make sense after you set a deliberate monthly cap.
